Abstract

Designing and implementing indoor lighting for healthcare environments is a complex task because of increasing technological advancement and automation, multiple user needs across different hours of the day, and various demanding work tasks. This research explores healthcare staff satisfaction, perceived ease of use, and usefulness of a circadian lighting system in a neuro-intensive care unit and an eldercare home. The outcomes include identified perceived advantages and barriers of the circadian lighting system based on questionnaires, interviews, card sorting, and go-along observations. These include higher staff satisfaction with circadian lighting compared with pre-existing lighting; however, challenges such as brightness levels and manual tuning of lighting were identified. The work concludes that collaboration with the staff, early stakeholder involvement, user training, and iterative design adjustment of the lighting based on user feedback are all important factors for successful implementation.
